About Ian Bruce:

After a 17 year political exile, Ian Bruce returned to South Africa in 1992 where he served as Executive Director of the New Africa Theatre Association (NATA). His plays been produced all over the world, garnering awards and accolades in South Africa, Netherlands, United States, and Sweden. Ian’s script Groundswell is required reading for students in South Africa.

A: Yes! The event is ‘drop-in’ style, so come through any time between 7-9:30pm. Stay for as long as you can!⁣⁣

Q: Do we have to share our drawings?⁣⁣
A: Not at all! In between sets, we spent about 5 minutes sharing our drawings (i.e. holding them up to the screen and being spotlit). It’s a very supportive environment, as folks often say encouraging words about the drawings. However, this is totally optional – if you’d prefer not to share, that is absolutely okay!⁣⁣

Q: Is it free?⁣⁣
A: Yes! If you’re in the position to support, we do have a $5-20 suggested donation, which goes towards tipping the models. All the models are volunteering their time, so this is very appreciated. However, no one is turned away due to lack of funds, and you can show gratitude to the models in other ways: sharing your drawings, following their creative practices, etc.⁣⁣

Join our Write in Brooklyn event with Jacqueline Woodson, moderated by Isaac Fitzgerald and hosted by the SFC MFA Program! On January 14th, from 6-7:30pm, Jacqueline and Isaac will discuss writing, literature, and the creative process. The acclaimed author is the National Book Award winner for her New York Times bestseller, Brown Girl Dreaming, and the 2020 recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship, the 2020 recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, among many others.

Jacqueline Woodson is the recipient of a 2020 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2020 Hans Christian Andersen Award, the 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and the 2018 Children’s Literature Legacy Award, and she was the 2018–2019 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Her New York Times bestselling memoir, Brown Girl Dreaming, won the National Book Award, as well as the Coretta Scott King Award, a Newbery Honor, and the NAACP Image Award. She also wrote the adult books Red at the Bone, a New York Times bestseller, and Another Brooklyn, a 2016 National Book Award finalist. Kick off 2021 by creating your very own vision board and bring positivity to your new year! Grab some magazines and construction paper, or anything you have around the house and join BSM staff for a fun night of crafting and mindful goal setting! The event is free for Bloomingdale students and families, with a suggested donation for all other guests. All are invited to join. Ready to set some intentional resolutions for the new year? Then come join Bloomingdale staff for a night of mindful goal-setting and take time to craft your very own vision board! A vision board is a powerful visual tool to help create daily inspiration and remind you of your passions, dreams, and goals. Magazine clippings, stickers, pictures, quotes, and more can all be used to craft your vision board and help you make the most of the year 2021!

A vision board is a visual representation of the things you want to accomplish or acquire. People create vision boards to have a constant reminder of what they are working towards. Unlike an Action Plan, a Vision Board is generally not specific and doesn’t normally focus on the ‘how’. Instead, it focuses on the ‘what’. It is a powerful visual tool that you can use as inspiration for your journey toward the life you want to live. It can help clarify your hopes, dreams, and goals. It is a way to remind yourself of your passion and your purpose. Once the Vision Board is complete, it can serve as a helpful future resource that you can use over and over again to stay on track and motivated.

What You Will Need

A large piece of construction paper or poster board (Don’t have a poster board? An old cork board or regular printer paper works just fine!)
Old magazines, Internet pictures, pamphlets, etc. (Libraries often sell their old magazines for a small fee. Ask the neighbors for old magazines. Use the Internet by searching for a specific type of image or theme. Websites such as www.istockphoto.com or Google Images are great sites to explore.)
Pens, markers, pencils
Glue, tape, or other adhesive
Any other decorating tools you’d like to use such as washi tape, stamps, stickers, found objects, glitter, etc.

Bloomingdale School of Music Spring Classes Begin February 6 For All Ages and Levels of Experience

Bloomingdale School of Music will offer virtual music classes for the spring semester beginning February 6, 2021. Bloomingdale classes aim to educate students and instill discipline, fun and a passion for self-expression through music through high-quality instruction throughout the year. Music has the power to change lives and the curriculum is designed to reflect this philosophy. The School offers classes for a variety of instruments and for every type of student at all skill levels, as well as virtual ensembles. Bloomingdale School of Music will be completely virtual this spring and will continue to offer online learning options only, as The School has done successfully since the onset of the pandemic, pivoting seamlessly from entirely in-person learning, to more nearly 90% participation in virtual classes.

“Our 2020 spring programming is meant to be accessible for all with convenience in mind for all levels and ages,” said Laura Gravino, Director of Education. “We offer classes for early childhood learners, K-12 students, and adults, in addition to opportunities for intergenerational learning and classes where no prior musical experience is necessary. Limited financial means are never a barrier at Bloomingdale; scholarships and financial aid are available during our spring semester, as they are throughout the year.”

Access to music education for all has been Bloomingdale School of Music’s hallmark since its founding over 50 years ago. Bloomingdale works with its students to eliminate barriers to quality music education in an inclusive manner that translates well to an online experience with faculty. Financial aid is key in many cases as well. Over the past decade alone, Bloomingdale has awarded more than $2 million in tuition assistance and aided thousands of families.

Early Childhood
BSM will offer two 8-week sessions of Early Childhood classes, including options for the whole family to join in on the activity. This new schedule is designed to be flexible for parents or young families! BSM will continue to offer classes based in Dalcroze Theory, Music and Movement and Orff Instrument classes.

Private Lessons
BSM will offer private lessons in a wide variety of instruments. Sign up for a trial lesson, or a lesson for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. Our private lessons offer individual attention, customization, and a personalized curriculum. Students and teachers are strategically matched based on skill, schedules, and the student’s preferred teaching style. Our private lessons can be transformative for students as they discover their unique talents and interests.

Lecture-Based Classes for All
BSM will offer lecture classes in three series this spring. These classes are great for students new to music education with no instrument or private lesson experience, and also for those with one or many years of practice behind them. The Spring 2021 lecture series includes the Musicianship Series, the World Music Series, and the Music Appreciation Series. Many of these classes are for students aged 14 to adult and will include mixed intergenerational groups.

Theory Expansion
BSM is excited to have three complete levels of theory to explore for students between the ages of 8 and 18. For adults, BSM will continue with its popular Intro to Theory.

Performing Ensembles
Using the lessons BSM learned in the spring and summer semesters of creating layered videos for final performances, and using weekly sessions for coaching and peer feedback, BSM is excited to host ensembles again this semester; ensembles again this semester;  Virtual Broadway Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Flute Choir, Preparatory Flute Choir, Trumpet Ensemble, Guitar Orchestra, Junior Guitar Orchestra, and Adult Guitar Orchestra.

Trumpet Ensemble
The trumpet ensemble is a group of 3-5 members that works on ensemble playing, intonation, blending, and rhythmic study. The group performs in public several times a year, including at trumpet recitals, Sharing Hours, and the annual Performathon. The ensemble is open to trumpet students NYSSMA level III-VI or higher, along with recommendation from current private teacher. Soft and fluffy, sweet and light, Japanese soufflé pancakes have captured the hearts of foodies around the world. This delectable comfort food is a must for both pancake and dessert lovers, but mastering these tall and delicate pancakes at home can seem daunting. Join us at this virtual workshop where Maiko Kyogoku, owner of New York-based Japanese restaurant Bessou, teaches how to cook soufflé pancakes in the comfort of your own home. Join ICP for a special book program honoring the work of David Gilkey, a celebrated conflict photographer who helped NPR bring vivid life to big and small stories with global impact before he was killed on assignment in Helmand, Afghanistan in 2016.

In a new book from powerHouse, Pictures of the Radio, Gilkey’s work is highlighted, showing images taken on assignments in Afghanistan, Haiti, Gaza, and other locations around the globe while he captured conflict, natural disasters and other critical stories. The book includes recollections of Gilkey in essays by NPR correspondents who knew and worked with him, including Jason Beaubien, Ari Shapiro, David Greene, Julie McCarthy, and Eric Westervelt.

During this special event moderated by ICP’s managing director of programs, David Campany, hear from the editors of the book—Quil Lawrence and Chip Somodevilla, and Ariel Zambelich, as well as Lynsey Addario and other colleagues and long-time friends of Gilkey, for an evening celebrating the work of this important photojournalist.

Canadian photographer Sara Hylton, a 2014 graduate of ICP’s One-Year Certificate Program in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism, travels the globe with her camera, using it to shine an intimate light on stories of resilience and to challenge oppressive and unjust systems within society. From documenting those living along the Keystone XL pipeline in Montana to her powerful environmental portraits depicting families of missing and murdered indigenous women (MMIW) in Saskatchewan Canada, Hylton continually seeks new ideas to explore and stories to tell. In the next session of ICP Lessons, we will learn more about Hylton’s approach to crafting an evolving vision and pursuing avenues for sharing her work.

Q: Where does it take place?
A: Good ole’ Zoom! Links will be sent upon registration.

Q: Is it okay if I come late for the Drink + Draw?
A: Yes! The event is ‘drop-in’ style, so come through any time between 7-9:30pm. Stay for as long as you can!

Q: Do we have to share our drawings?
A: Not at all! In between sets, we spent about 5 minutes sharing our drawings (i.e. holding them up to the screen and being spotlit). It’s a very supportive environment, as folks often say encouraging words about the drawings. However, this is totally optional – if you’d prefer not to share, that is absolutely okay!

Q: Is it free?
A: Yes! If you’re in the position to support, we do have a $5-20 suggested donation, which goes towards tipping the models and 15% will go towards Flux Factory. All the models are volunteering their time, so this is very appreciated. However, no one is turned away due to lack of funds, and you can show gratitude to the models in other ways: sharing your drawings, following their creative practices, etc.

Join Dr. Lori Weintrob, Director of the Wagner College Holocaust Center, for a program exploring the heroic lives and legacies of these female resistance fighters.

Weintrob will be in conversation with Rokhl Kafrissen, Yiddish culture writer and Tablet Magazine contributor, and Rachel Rachama Roth, a survivor of Auschwitz who will provide her eyewitness testimony to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

As a small child, Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff fled her Nazi-occupied hometown of Kosice, Slovakia (then Czechoslovakia) along with her parents and infant brother. They remained on the run and in open hiding for seven months—during which they had several narrow escapes, including an arrest in Spain—until they reached Lisbon, Portugal, where they joined tens of thousands of Jewish refugees awaiting ships to the United States. With the assistance of HIAS, Dr. Klein Kassenoff and her parents were rescued from Portugal in 1941, boarding one of the last ships to safety.

Dr. Klein Kassenoff became the founding director of the University of Miami Holocaust Teacher Institute. She is also the Education Chairperson at the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach, Florida, and the Education Specialist for Holocaust Studies for Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) presents the monthly Panel, Rethinking Marketing Strategies to Reach the Wider Virtual Audience on Thursday, March 25, 2021 via Zoom. The panel will be led by Roger Gonzalez of Alliance Media Theatricals & LocalTheatreUSA.com, Monica Hammond of Big Leap Brands (former director of marketing for Davenport Theatrical Enterprises) and Toni Isreal of Realemn Productions (former managing director of Walker International Communications). The shutdown of live theater threw many into a tailspin, but some rebounded and embraced the new medium of virtual performance to keep their projects moving ahead, and their passion alive. Bravo! Now how do you reach audiences? And are they even the same people who support live theater? While production possibilities may be limited, audience bases have actually widened now that we can easily tap into markets beyond our geographic location. With little money to spend on traditional ad campaigns during these tough times, the emphasis on reaching new audiences has also shifted. A digital world needs a digital marketing strategy, of course. And we will look at Facebook ad strategies, email marketing, adwords, partnerships with Goldstar/Groupon, etc. – all the tools we used before the shutdown. But how we use them now may be different.
