SPECIAL EXHIBIT at the American Museum of Natural History

A:shiwi A:wan Ulohnanne: The Zuni World

Thursday, October 17, 2013−Sunday, January 12, 2014

Tickets: Free for Members or with Museum admission

For a limited time, see modern Zuni paintings depicting ancestral sites throughout the Colorado Plateau. Part of an “indigenous mapping” movement that has become increasingly important over the last 20 years, the paintings were created by 14 Zuni artists in collaboration with Zuni cultural advisors and produced in partnership with the A:shiwi A:wan Museum and Heritage Center (AAMHC) in Zuni, New Mexico. AAMHC Director Jim Enote curated the exhibition.

“The Zunis, rather than relying on Western cartography—which they feel has effaced their presence within and knowledge of their ancestral landscape in New Mexico and Arizona—asked artists within their community to paint representations of historically and culturally important places,” says Museum Curator Peter Whiteley. “The paintings are very rich in Zuni references.”

View the exhibition in the Audubon Gallery, on the Museum’s fourth floor. Hours are limited.
