Event: Sustainable Architecture and Industry Bike Tour
Date & Time:  Saturday, 5/3, 3pm – 5pm.  Saturday, 6/21, 12pm – 2pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  $24 per person; 10% discount for members of BLDG 92

Description:  Get a “handle” on sustainable architecture and industry on this bicycle tour of Yard. You’ll learn about many of the Yard’s green initiatives, including adaptive reuse of historic structures and materials, cutting edge LEED-certified buildings, alternative energy projects, and sustainable manufacturing practices employed by Yard tenants. Get an up-close look at the nation’s first green multi-story industrial building, see wind-and-solar-powered lamps built and installed at the Yard, and peer down into a 19th-century dry dock that is still in use today. Event:  The Can-Do Yard: WWII at the Brooklyn Navy Yard tour
Date & Time:  Sunday 5/4, 6/8, and 6/15.  Saturday, 5/24.  11am – 1pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  FREE for WWII veterans.  $30 all others.  Veterans, current and former military personnel and members of BLDG 92 receive a 10% discount.
Description:  Turnstile Tours and BLDG 92 evoke the Yard during World War II on this interactive tour drawing from the experiences of the 70,000 wartime workers who made it the “Can-Do” Yard. Visitors will explore the role of New York City’s waterfront in the war effort and make connections between the Yard and famous battles of WWII.  Highlights include the Naval Hospital campus, the Naval Film Exchange, a working dry dock, and legendary sites in the surrounding community. Event:  Fort Greene House Tour: “At Home with the Arts” tour
Date & Time:  Sunday, 5/4. 1:30pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  $25 advanced ticket. $30 at the door.
Description:  BLDG 92 is proud to be part of the 32nd Fort Greene House Tour. This self-guided walking tour provides inside access to the beautiful homes and cultural hubs of Fort Greene. Ticket-holders who visit BLDG 92 will receive a free 30 minute guided exhibit tour of BLDG 92, the former Marine Commandant’s residence designed by 19th century architect, Thomas Ustick Walter. In keeping with the day’s theme, our tour will focus on the rich history of artisans on the site as well as the artists and craftsman of today’s Brooklyn Navy Yard. Event:  Dry Dock Discovery!
Date & Time:  Saturday,5/10. 12:00pm – 12:30pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  $10.

Event:  Brooklyn Boat Builders Bash
Date & Time:  Saturday, 5/10.  12pm.

Description:  Come one and all for a day of family fun and information gathering including tours, demos, boat displays, workshops and more. Event:  Exhibit Opening!  Making it in NYC: the Era of New Manufacturing
Date & Time:  Friday, 5/16.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92

Event:  Urban Ecology Tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard
Date & Time:  BY BUS:  Sunday, 5/11.  11am – 1pm.  BY BIKE:  Sunday, 5/18 and 6/29.  3pm – 5pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  30 per person, 10% discount for members of the Brooklyn Historical Society,
Description:  Discover the natural world amid a thriving urban industrial park on this bicycle and walking tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard.  Explore New York City’s waterways, terrestrial ecosystems and urban farms.  Learn how Brooklyn Grange produces 20,000 pounds of vegetables each year on their stunning 65,000-square-foot rooftop farm.  Hear about the health of the city’s waterways on a visit to an oyster restoration project led by a local school.  Identify native plants, trees and wildlife taking refuge on the historic Naval Hospital campus and hear plans for a memorial park being developed by Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.  For more information and to register, visit http://bldg92.org/events/.

 

Event:  Factory Tour: Whiskey Wars!
Date & Time:  Sunday, 5/18 and 6/15. 4:15 pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  $15.  $12 for members of BLDG 92.
Description:  In the 19th century, Marines were dispatched from the Navy Yard to crack down on illegal whiskey distilling in what became known as the WHISKEY WARS. Today, Kings County Distillery is proudly making moonshine and more on premises. Event:  Celebrate veterans and service at BLDG 92

Description: Spend Memorial Day weekend at BLDG 92.  At 11am, tour the “Can-Do” Yard.  Watch an all veteran cast in Westley Thomas’ A Hard Decision at 1:30pm and 4pm.  Create a tribute poppy to honor Yard or military service for display on our new Tribute Wall monument.  Enjoy happy hour and panoramic views from our rooftop café.  For more information, visit http://bldg92.org/events/.

 

Event:  A Hard Decision: a staged reading and musical production
Date & Time:  Saturday, 5/24.  1:30pm and 4:00pm.

Cost:  Free
Description:  A love triangle unfolds in Westley Thomas’ A Hard Decision—a story that provides insight into life during the Vietnam War and the universal experiences of those who go abroad to fight for freedom. Set in Staten Island in the 1960s, his work touches on love and war, family and friendship and the tough decisions we all have to make. Event: Stonemasonry in the Digital Age
Date & Time:  Thursday, 6/12.  8pm.
Location:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92
Cost:  FREE
Description: Join Stonemason and Artist Christian Herrmann for his powerful presentation of “Stonemasonry,” a multi-media revelation of this ancient craft in the digital age.  Through film, photography, music, 3D projection and performance; Christian will highlight the history, observe famous structures, and detail different techniques of the craft.  Blending craft and technology, the program will demonstrate a sense of what it feels like and what it takes to be a stonemason in the fast-paced, ever-evolving world we live in today. Join us at 8pm for after-hours exploration of our new exhibit, Making it in NYC: the Era of New Manufacturing.  Performance begins after sunset and is followed by a reception with Mr. Herrmann.

 

Event:  Family Fun Day at BLDG 92

From the rooftop farm to the waterfront Dry Dock, BLDG 92 hosts a day of Yard-wide adventure and hands-on learning.  In addition to FREE museum admission, activities include:

  • 11am – 12pm: Yard Inspectors Tour. Step into the shoes of an inspector in-training on this Yard-wide adventure! Follow clues through the Yard to uncover its hidden treasures. Search for industrial cranes, street lamps powered by wind and the sun, and much, more on this hands-on guided Yard-wide family tour led by Turnstile Tours. Appropriate for children ages 6 to 13 and their parents. $10.
  • 12pm – 1pm: Lunch at Ted & Honey. Visitors enjoy 10% discounts on all purchases in the café.
  • 1pm – 1:45pm: A tour of rooftop farm, Brooklyn Grange, led by City Growers.  Learn about all the natural processes that occur on a green roof farm. Children of all ages will engage in hands-on lessons about where food comes from, plant science, composting, honey bees, and chickens. $10.
  • 2pm – 3pm: Get your hands dirty! Come observe and dig for Red Wiggler Worms with City Growers and discover how worms turn food scraps into compost.  FREE
  • 2:30pm – 4:30pm: Brooklyn Navy Yard; Past, Present & Future Tour. Our popular Yard-wide tour will offer a special family component—BINGO game! $30.
  • ALL DAY: Color your favorite Yard tenant in our “People of your Navy Yard” coloring book. FREE
  • ALL DAY: Play the Sustainability Scavenger Hunt and win prizes. FREE

Event:  Brooklyn Navy Yard Overview tour:  The Past, Present, and Future of the Yard
Date & Time:  Saturdays (Ongoing), 2:00pm-4:00pm thru February.  2:30-4:30 beginning in March.  Sundays (ongoing beginning 3/23), 2:30pm – 4:30pm.

Cost:  $30.  Members of BLDG 92; Brooklyn Historical Society; Brooklyn Greenway Initiative; Intrepid; and Lower East Side Tenement Museum receive a 10% discount.

Event:  BLDG 92Presents…Wesley Fagan: A Life in Pictures

Description:  Jazz musician and the Navy Yard’s first African-American photography director passed away in 2012 at the age of 101.  A Bed-Stuy local, his great American story and selections of his work—including his capture of the USS Constellation blaze, one of Brooklyn’s most disastrous—are now on view at BLDG 92.  For more information, visit http://bldg92.org/exhibitions/special-exhibits/.

 

Event:  Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past, Present and Future exhibit

Event:  Designing the Future
