Fall 2013 Cultural Series as Presented by the Onassis Cultural Center NY

The Onassis Cultural Center NY Announces Its Fall 2013 Cultural Series, With
Ten Events Spanning The Fields Of Music, Film, Theater, Philosophy And Politics

Onassis Cultural Center NYNEW YORK, NY, September 16, 2013 — Public dialogues led by the noted philosopher and author Simon Critchley, a new series; a tribute to celebrated filmmaker Costa-Gavras launching new conversation series “Profiles” hosted by Paul Holdengräber; a discussion about the contest in today’s world between tyranny and freedom; and a concert pairing prominent U.S. and Greek composers of the same generation, Giorgos Koumendakis and Steven Mackey, will be among the programs that the Onassis Cultural Center NY will offer in its Fall 2013 Cultural Series.

Now in its twelfth year of programming, the Onassis Cultural Center NY (OCC NY) has organized more than one hundred twenty cultural events to date as part of its mission to explore all aspects of Hellenic culture. Throughout the 2013-14 season, the OCC NY will present or co-present its roster of public events and programs at leading cultural venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn while the Center’s Midtown gallery is under renovation.

Among the distinguished participants in the Fall 2013 Cultural Series will be theater critic Hilton Als, theater director Thomas Ostermeier, artist Alexandre Singh, “master curator of the arts” Paul Holdengräber, PRISM Saxophone Quartet, pianist George Emmanuel Lazaridis, authors Artemis Cooper and Ben Downing, NYRB Classics series editor Edwin Frank, and scholars Alexander Nehamas, Waller R. Newell, Barry Strauss, and Ryan Balot.

Ambassador Loucas Tsilas, Executive Director of the Onassis Foundation (USA), stated, “The sheer variety of the subjects and viewpoints in our Fall 2013 Cultural Series testifies to the vitality of Greek art and ideas throughout the world today. From ancient traditions of drama and politics to contemporary trends in cinema and music, the many aspects of Hellenic culture continue to thrive everywhere—including the careers of the esteemed participants in these programs, and the institutions that are our valued collaborators.”

The categories of events on the Fall 2013 calendar are:

  • Public Dialogues: The third year of the wide-ranging series On Truth (and Lies) led by Simon Critchley, now co-presented by the OCC NY and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM),
  • and Profiles: Costa-Gavras, launching “Profiles” a new series of  public dialogues between Paul Holdengräber and celebrated cultural figures,
  • Music: Concerts at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Concert Hall and Princeton University
  • Film: the seventh New York City Greek Film Festival, with four special OCC NY screening events at theaters throughout Manhattan
  • Books and Ideas: a discussion on Patrick Leigh Fermor in Greece, presented in collaboration with The New York Review of Books on the occasion of the publication of Artemis Cooper’s biography, Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure (New York Review Books), and a discussion about the ongoing ramifications of ancient Greek political theory and practice, on the occasion of the publication of Professor Waller R. Newell’s Tyranny: A New Interpretation (Cambridge University Press).
