Governors Island to Open All Year Round Beginning November 1, 2021 says Mayor and the Trust for Governors Island

Governors Island will now be open to the public all year long” was the announcement that came today from NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Trust for Governors Island.

The single island attraction that’s usually open only from May to October will have its schedule expanded to 365 days a year beginning November 1, 2021. From 7:00 am to 6:15 pm folks will be able to visit the island through NYC Ferry’s newly expanded service.

“ … to match this new schedule, we’re expanding NYC Ferry service to reach Governors Island daily, year-round, so New Yorkers can really, really enjoy this special place,” said the Mayor. “That’ll begin this year when our Coney Island route is inaugurated as part of NYC Ferry”

That which the Mayor speaks of is the new connection from Coney Island and Bay Ridge at the southernmost tip of Brooklyn to the Wall Street area at Pier 11. It’s near this Manhattan locale that one’s able to access the ferry to Governors Island from the Battery Maritime Building on South Street. Other ferry access routes include two from Brooklyn borough, available on weekends.

“The launch of year-round public access to Governors Island is a game changer,” said Merritt Birnbaum, Executive Director of the Friends of Governors Island. “Since our founding in the mid-nineties, our primary goal has been to see Governors Island activated as one of our city’s most extraordinary public places – a goal that was never fully realizable without 365-day access. With the introduction of year-round public ferry service from Manhattan and Brooklyn, the city and the Trust for Governors Island are opening up a whole new world for public programming, amenities and events that will enable the Island to be fully interwoven into the fabric of everyday New Yorkers’ lives.”

New Yorkled’s been a huge fan of the island and all that it’s got to offer. It’s a peaceful diversion from the stress of city life. With its great views of the city and the skies above, regardless of whether there’s sun or clouds, Governors Island is a sure delight for anyone looking for a temporary escape. We look forward to visiting in the coming months and sharing our experiences through video and photography.
