About:
The Naumburg Orchestral Concerts are a series of free outdoor classical music concerts held in Central Park’s Naumburg Bandshell. The concerts have been held annually since 1905, making them one of the longest-running classical music series in the United States.
The concerts were founded by philanthropist Elkan Naumburg, who was passionate about bringing classical music to a wider audience. He believed that Central Park was the perfect setting for these concerts, and he commissioned architect Stanford White to design the Naumburg Bandshell. The bandshell was inaugurated in 1903, and the first Naumburg Orchestral Concerts were held the following year.
The concerts have featured some of the world’s most renowned classical musicians, including Leonard Bernstein, Yo-Yo Ma, and Itzhak Perlman. They have also featured a wide variety of lesser-known performers, giving them a platform to showcase their talents.
The Naumburg Orchestral Concerts are a beloved tradition in New York City, and they attract thousands of people each summer. The concerts are a great way to enjoy free classical music in a beautiful setting.
