Intrepid Museum Announces 2023 Summer Movie Series Lineup

Free Outdoor Screenings to Take Place on Intrepid’s Flight Deck Under the Stars

Experience the popular Intrepid Summer Movie Series! On select Friday nights, visitors can watch a movie on the dramatic setting of the flight deck of the historic aircraft carrier located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue). Members of the public are invited to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets to the Museum to view classic films, free of charge, on a huge inflatable screen.

Celebrate the 80th anniversary of the ship’s commissioning, featuring classic “ship” themed films. The Movie Series will open with the screening of Top Gun on Friday, May 26, kicking off Memorial Day weekend. Doors open at 7:00pm. The movie will begin at sunset.

The Museum’s Free Fridays also take place on June 30, July 28 and August 25. On Free Fridays, visitors can explore the Museum free of charge and enjoy after-hours programming. Doors open at 5:00pm and close at 8:30pm.

Top Gun

Top Gun is a 1986 action film starring Tom Cruise as Maverick, a young and reckless naval aviator who competes with other elite pilots at the Top Gun school in San Diego. He falls in love with Charlie, a civilian instructor who challenges his skills and attitude. He also faces a rival named Iceman, who is determined to win the Top Gun trophy. Maverick’s life is shaken by the death of his best friend and partner Goose, who dies in a training accident. He must overcome his guilt and fear to prove himself in a final mission against enemy fighters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a 2003 adventure film starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, a witty and cunning pirate who seeks to reclaim his ship, the Black Pearl, from his former ally, Barbossa, who has turned into an undead pirate along with his crew due to an ancient curse. Jack teams up with Will Turner, a young blacksmith who is in love with Elizabeth Swann, the governor’s daughter who has been kidnapped by Barbossa because she possesses a gold medallion that is part of the cursed treasure. Jack and Will embark on a perilous journey to rescue Elizabeth and lift the curse, facing dangers such as the British navy, a pirate port, and a mysterious island

Crimson Tide

Crimson Tide is a 1995 action thriller film directed by Tony Scott and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It depicts a conflict between the captain and the executive officer of a U.S. nuclear submarine during a crisis in Russia, where a rebel faction threatens to launch nuclear missiles at the U.S. and Japan. The captain, Ramsey, is a veteran commander who believes in following orders without question, while the executive officer, Hunter, is a well-educated newcomer who advocates for verifying the orders before launching a nuclear strike. Their disagreement escalates into a mutiny that divides the crew and puts the fate of the world at stake.

Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick is a 2022 action drama film directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie. It is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise as Maverick, a veteran naval aviator who returns to the U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (also known as TOPGUN) as an instructor. There, he must face his past and mentor a new generation of pilots, including Rooster, the son of his late friend and partner Goose. He also has to deal with a rival instructor named Payback and a love interest named Penny Benjamin. Maverick and his trainees are assigned to a top-secret mission that requires them to fly hypersonic jets and face a dangerous enemy.

Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited. Light concessions will be sold onsite, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages. Alcohol is not permitted. All exits are final; there is no reentry allowed. The Space Shuttle Pavilion will close at 8:00pm and the bridge will be closed during Free Fridays.

Intrepid Museum members will receive priority access to the screenings. The Museum strives to make all public programs accessible for people with disabilities. All films will be captioned for the hearing impaired.
